Avensis Tourer offers the whole package

Toyota’s Avensis Tourer is an ideal family estate, perfect for taking on large loads, writes Edward Stephens.
The estate is an ideal family car, offering “space in abundance [and] a definite up-market feel” as the car lights up and unlocks at a touch of a handle.
The doors close with ease, the leather seats are heated and the driver’s seat has a memory system in case of multiple users. The engine starts at the push of a button and the steering wheel automatically adjusts to your ideal driving position.
“From the outside it’s sleek and stylish… yet I couldn’t say it’s a car which will necessarily excite you,” he says.
It is a consistently reliable car, in which seven gears are possible in manual, while the auto box “offers an infinite number of ratios”.
The 14 per cent power-increase on the 1.8-litre engine is noticeable, while fuel consumption is reduced to 37mpg.
Despite its length, reversing is aided by a rear-view camera, which displays on the navigation system screen.
Carrying capacity can match that of a “small van”, and cargo rails allow secure division of separate loads. This space means that there is plenty of leg room for rear seat passengers.
Stephens concludes: “The Avensis Tourer is a car that offers everything that most drivers will want.”
