It seems that Toyota is not only to use its innovative hydrogen fuel cell system in cars, it has also installed the technology at one of its largest office complexes, in America.

The Japanese manufacturer will be using its fuel cell technology to cut costs and carbon emissions at the Toyota Motor sales headquarters, near Los Angeles. 

The 1.11 megawatt stationary fuel cell installed at the L.A headquarters, supplies the buildings on site with around half the power they need to function.

The fuel cell has been brought in to generate this power in time for summer, when demand from the headquarters is at its peak.

Bringing the Toyota hydrogen fuel cell to this site, helps the headquarters to reduce its overall utility bills, similar to Toyota car owners benefiting from reduced running costs. 

In fact, the cell at the site in L.A uses the same basic technology as the system for Toyota’s upcoming production car. 

The technology in the car is known as a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell. These fuel cells are well-suited to use in vehicles, as they can be turned on and off quickly. 

It is this responsiveness and reliability of PEM fuel cells, which also make them the ideal power source for the Toyota Motor sales site, when it experiences high-demand periods.

The fuel cell powering the sales site in L.A records an impressive performance as its average power supply is equivalent to the electricity needs of 765 average homes.

When compared with a solar panel on the same site, the fuel cell is capable of double the power capacity and it is expected to reduce up to 1,500 tons of CO2 emissions during peak summer operating hours. 

Managing the site’s sustainable strategy programme is Mark Yamamuchi, who comments: “Most other fuel cell technologies need to run continuously to generate baseload power. This project is unique in that we are leveraging the characteristics of the PEM technology to load-follow.”
