The Toyota Hilux is the incredibly reliable pick-up truck that from the Japanese car manufacturer. We’ve spent a week with one using it as an everyday car and this is how we got on.
Before we had even hopped in the cabin we already loved the Hilux. From the front it has the look of a desirable SUV, however from the side you can see it is a stunning pick-up truck.
After gazing at it from every angle we finally got behind the wheel. The cabin is neat and simple with chunky controls for the main components such as the radio and heaters that are easy to reach. We had the five-seater double cab to test, which was extremely spacious for all in the cabin. The Hilux is also available as a Twin Cab two-seater if that suits your requirements better.
Under the bonnet, we had the 2.5-litre turbodiesel that produces 118bhp and offered plenty enough pull even when the loading bay was full. You also have the option of a 2.5-litre with 101bhp or the 168bhp 3.0-litre diesel.
Thanks to the firm suspension, the Hilux is superb when cornering with very little body roll. The well weighted steering gave us even more confidence when cornering and proved really handy when parking.
A guarantee that comes with the Hilux is that it is pretty much unbreakable. Take yourself back to the Top Gear episode when they tried everything in their power to destroy an earlier model yet still failed.
During our time with the Hilux we thought we should really test it, so we loaded it up with as much rubbish as possible and took it to the tip. It took lots of full bin bags, an old table and a bedside table with ease.
On the motorway the Hilux is comfortable and you get a great view of the road thanks to its high seating position. It eats up the miles with ease and is effortless to drive over long distances.
We had a great week with the Hilux, the only downside was that we didn’t have it for a little longer.
