Toyota have recently announced its re-entry back into the World Rally Championship 2017, they are set to deliver a full rally-ready Yaris to compete in the event.
The incredibly powerful version of the Yaris is equipped with a 1.6 litre direct-injection turbo engine that delivers a massive 300 horsepower to the wheels. It will be built and tested by Toyota Motorsport GmbH to ensure it complies with the FIA regulations.
However, Toyota have hinted towards a street-legal version of the powerful hatch. The Yaris is rumoured to carry the 2.0 litre turbo four under its bonnet, the same used in the Lexus NX 200t. We are more than likely to see a six-speed manual transmission with the feature of front-wheel drive as an alternative to the complex all-wheel drive system we will be seeing in the much more powerful rally version.
It is expected that only a limited amount will be offered, the reason being to meet the FIA homologation requirement. If produced, the hot hatch would be taking the same route and have to compete with the likes of the Citroen DS3 Racer and the Volkswagen Polo WRC Street. Plus it will be sure to hold a similar premium cost of around £34,000.
Keep an eye out for the street-legal version of the Toyota Yaris WRC rally car, we’ll certainly be keeping our fingers crossed that Toyota decides to bring it our way!
