It's one of the most enduring names in Toyota's history and now there's a new model of the RAV4.
First launched in 1994 as a recreational SUV, the RAV4 is still one of the class leaders in the SUV segment - and in one of the most significant changes to the model since that launch, the car has now gained hybrid power.
The new model has been refreshed inside and out in response to customer feedback since 2013. New headlight and rear lamp clusters are part of the new styling front and rear, complemented by new 17 and 18-inch alloy wheel designs.
In the cabin there's a new 4.2-inch colour multi-information display, together with the 7-inch touchscreen with access to the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system, presenting information more clearly to the driver. There have been some layout changes too, adding new storage and improving the interior ambience.
There's five grades in the new RAV4 lineup. Entry level Active is joined by Business Edition, new Business Edition Plus, Icon and, replacing the previous top grade Invincible, Excel. Active and Business Edition exclusively use the 2-litre D4-D diesel engine and front wheel drive, while the Business Edition Plus is a hybrid-only grade.
Icon and Excel specifications get access to all three powertrain options - the 141hp diesel in front-wheel drive, the 149hp petrol in four-wheel drive and the 195hp petrol-electric hybrid four-wheel drive. Both the petrol and hybrid models are paired with a CVT automatic, while the diesel uses a 6-speed manual. Emissions are as low as 118g/km in the hybrid model, with a 55mpg combined economy rating.
Even from the entry Active trim the RAV4 is well-equipped, with Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system with touchscreen, six-speaker audio system with DAB radio, rear-view camera, cruise control, sunglasses holder, shark fin antenna and leather steering wheel cover added to the already generous specification that included LED daytime running lights, air conditioning, rear privacy glass and electric door mirrors.
Toyota Safety Sense is available as an option on all RAV4 models from Business Edition and above, adding radar-controlled Pre-Collision System, Brake Assist and Active Cruise Control.
