New Toyota GT86 at New York International Motor ShowThe original GT86 was popular amongst motoring enthusiasts for its rear-wheel drive, lightweight frame and well-balanced chassis, and its latest update will give even more in those departments.
The 2017 GT86 was unveiled at the New York International Motor Show and despite not many changes taking place under the bonnet the bodywork certainly looks sportier.
Changes to the bodywork have come out of necessity to better the car’s performance, such as the larger central intake and altered roof to help with airflow.
Under the body, the suspension has been updated further to improve the already brilliant handling, which will give the driver more control and increased agility and will make the GT86 more nimble through the corners.
Toyota’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine from the 2012 version has been carried forward into the new model and maintains the 140mph top speed and 7.7 seconds from 0-60mph.
The GT86 has also had a revamp on the interior as well, with the focus on a higher quality finish using Alcantara upholstery on the door trims, seats and steering wheel, which has also been redesigned to integrate audio controls and the ‘86’ logo at its centre.
Despite its position as a sporty coupe, it is quite frugal with fuel and can achieve over 40mpg, making it one of the most efficient sports coupes on the market.
With orders expected to begin towards the end of the year, and with only minor cosmetic changes to an already solid base, prices are expected to be very similar to that of the 2012 version, with a starting price at just under £25,000.
