Since the introduction of the GT86 in 2012, it has become a driving enthusiast and motoring journalist favourite thanks to its accessible performance, rear-wheel drive and all-around fun.
With Akio Toyoda declaring: “If it’s not fun to drive, it’s not a car,” the GT86 was built to that mantra, and with the 2017 model it maintains that high level of fun, simplicity and classic sports car feel. The second generation GT86 has been given cosmetic tweaks to give it a more modern look, whilst maintaining the overall look that fans admire greatly.
With a lower and sportier nose for a more aggressive look, a stronger rear styling ethos – including a wing-type rear spoiler and wider black mouldings – and an enhanced coupe design, the GT86 is on attack from the outset.
Designed with a low centre of gravity, front engine/rear-wheel drive configuration and compact setup that you expect in much more premium models, the new version maintains the same user-friendly performance that made the GT86 so popular. Improvements have been made to the body’s rigidity, as well as adjustments to the dampers and suspension to improve handling and ride comfort.
Track mode has also been added by Toyota to give the driver an opportunity to extract even more performance from the 197bhp 2.0-litre ‘boxer’ engine and the adjustable underpinnings.
Inside, the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system has been added with the 6.1-inch touchscreen, a smaller steering wheel for an improved sportier feel and higher quality interior materials for enhanced comfort.
Starting from £26,140 for the manual version, the GT86 is as desirable as ever, and with the improved underpinnings and engine, it is even more fun than before. For more information on the GT86, contact your nearest Inchcape Toyota Centre.
