As a replacement for the current 1.33-litre petrol unit, Toyota is introducing a new 1.5-litre unit that offers more power, more torque and faster acceleration.
As well as improving the overall performance of the engine, Toyota has introduced it with improved fuel efficiency and a reduced level of emissions to help improve the environmental friendliness of the hatchback.
With a 12 per cent reduction in fuel consumption possible over the 1.33-litre unit, the new engine has been developed to follow the upcoming Euro 6c emissions guidelines, which aim to bring the overall emissions of future vehicles down considerably.
The naturally-aspirated unit offers 110bhp and peak torque of 136Nm at 4,400rpm, which helps to provide smooth driving on both the open road and urban commutes. It also gets the Yaris to 60mph quicker, with the time reduced by 0.8 seconds from 11.8 to 11 seconds.
This unit is breaking new ground for Toyota, as it introduces the brand’s first water-cooled exhaust manifold, which helps to extend the life of the engine and reduce emissions. The hope with this unit is that it will keep the Yaris ahead of the emissions game and keep Toyota at the forefront of engine development.
